The maiden edition of the McDan football tournament has been launched this morning at the Accra sports stadium.
The tournament which is being organized by the McDan Group of Companies is a colt’s football tournament with the aim of helping rejuvenate colt’s football in the country.
According to organizers, the competition will be played in all three categories, Under-13, Under-15, and U-17, and it’s expected to bring together about 200 colts clubs in and around the Greater Accra region.
In attendance was the Technical Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) coach Francis Oti Akenteng, Black Stars head coach Kwesi Appiah, the Greater Accra Regional Sports Development officer Richard Iddrisu Ewuntomah and the president of Phar Rangers Football Club Nana Amponsah.
FORMAT
At the end of the preliminary stages, a total of 144 clubs will qualify into the 1st group stage, where teams from 10 selected districts will be involved in a knockout competition to select 4 clubs per district per category.
Eugene Jacquaye, head of the organizing committee said the organizing committee has seeded some 24 pioneering colts clubs in the region will join the 120 clubs from the districts to bring the number to 144 clubs.
These clubs will then be put into 12 groups of four teams for the first group stage in an all play all format. The top two teams in each group totaling 24 clubs will then progress to group stage 2 where they will be put into eight groups of 3, for another round of all play all.
Winners of each group will now progress to the quarter-finals which will be on knockout bases with all matches at these stage through to the grand finals taking place at the new built ultra-modern McDan Sports Complex at La.
Winners in each category will go home with a trophy, a set of jersey, balls and cash prizes with the runners up also receive consolations cash prizes and balls.
Former Black Stars striker George Alhassan, who is a product of the colts system, was unveiled as the tournament ambassador.
The tournament starts from August 17th to September 29th.
