National tennis players, Johnson Acquah and Mariama Ibrahim, clinched the respective men’s and women’s McDan Foundation Training Matches titles after producing dominant displays last Saturday at the Accra Stadium.
Acquah defeated Benjamin Fumi 6-1, 6-4, while Mariama beat Shika McKorley 6-3, 6-3 in sweltering conditions on centre court.
After losing the opening two games against Shika in the women’s final, Winneba-based Mariama, 20, recovered from the slow start and controlled the toe with her opponent recording many unforced errors.
Crowd-favourite Acquah alias “Riskybwai” did not face any such challenges early on as he roared to a 6-1 in the first set, courtesy his powerful serves which his opponent struggled to return on many occasions.
However, he soon found himself trailing 3-1 in the second set after some extravagant showmanship.
Acquah soon found his groove again after returning to his trusted power serve and broke Fumi on the way to recording a 6-4 second set victory.
The winners received trophies, a GH¢ 1,000 cash prize and products, and souvenirs from the tournament sponsor with the runners-up receiving trophies and undisclosed cash prizes.
